Episode 11, "Love/Hate"
Robin gets Robert a new nurse named Richard because he keeps asking for sponge baths, and not long after that she finds him collapsed on the floor of his apartment. He's rushed to the ER, positive for sepsis with fluid in his lungs, right as a group of white supremacists floods the hospital following a fight that broke out near a nearby park. One of the men refuses treatment from Epiphany Johnson because of her race and demands a white doctor, and when Patrick Drake backs her up, the man tells him he isn't entitled to a specific type of doctor, only medical care. Toussaint offers to scrub in on Robert's surgery, telling Robin he's cut from the same cloth as her father and wants to be there for him. Robin calls Anna Devane, who arrives to find Robin breaking down, and that's when Robin finally tells Anna about Robert's colon cancer, something Robert had kept from her, and that he's in emergency surgery.
Anna sits with Robert once the surgery is over, and even with his eyes closed he knows her by touch, telling her she's a sight for sore eyes. The two fall into their old rhythm of jabs almost right away, trading lines about dancing shoes and rematches before he admits he's scared. Patrick and Robin have their own moment in this stretch too, agreeing they can't keep pulling away from each other with everything else going on. Away from the hospital, Claire begs Kyle for forgiveness after sleeping with Leo. Kyle tells her he thought she had more self-respect than that, then turns around and confronts Leo directly for sleeping with his roommate and best friend.
Episode 12, "Truth and Consequences"
Robert's temperature won't come down, and Anna learns the antibiotics that would normally help him fight the infection are limited because his body can't process anything stronger. Jagger Cates meets Anna for the first time here, and she opens up to him about how Robert is the only one who understands why she does what she does. Patrick learns the patient who left against medical advice was found dead the next morning, and his group is already blaming Patrick for refusing him care. Epiphany feels guilty for not getting a full check on the man before he walked out, even though there was nothing more she could have done once he refused to let her near him.
Kyle and Eric have their own turning point here, with Eric asking Kyle if he's ever had a perfect moment and Kyle telling him he's having one right now, right before they kiss for the first time. Robert has a harder scene with Anna later on, telling her he can't win this one and that every hero's time runs out eventually, and Anna holds him through it. His condition worsens enough that Robin has to check his eyes with a flashlight and confirm he's slipped into a coma, and Jagger delivers the news to Patrick that hate crime charges are being filed against him.
Episode 13, "Past and Presence, Part 1"
With Robert unconscious, most of this one plays out inside his head, built around a party Anna is throwing for him. It opens with a recreation of the night they met, a young Robin in a party dress eating a peanut butter sandwich, before Anna walks out of the kitchen in her wedding dress and veil. In Robert's mind, she's playing housewife, burning things in the kitchen and asking why he's got her stuck in there when she's clearly no Betty Crocker. He tells her the dress still looks good on her, asks if she remembers when they used to make the earth move, and she reminds him it's been a long time. Robin comes down the stairs, older and pregnant, asking what she missed, and Robert grumbles that he hates surprises unless it's Pamela Anderson.
Luke Spencer is the first guest through the door, joking about doing body shots and telling Robert he's deadlier than a mackerel. Robin offers him a peanut butter sandwich, and he notices she's pregnant, musing about how watching your own kids have kids makes you realize how fast life moves. Mac Scorpio shows up next wanting to play Bon Jovi, and Robin hands him a Men at Work cassette instead. The last knock at the door brings Sean Donely and Tiffany Hill, and the whole group spends the scene needling Robert and reminiscing about Mexico, Faison, and the eighties, with Luke refusing to relive that decade because of his own hair.
The tone shifts when Luke finally stops joking and tells Robert flat out that he didn't come to hear him wax poetic about the past; he came to save his life, and that going out like this is too ordinary for either of them; they deserve better than that. It's Luke who gets through to him, pulling him to his feet and refusing to let him give up quietly. Robin gets her moment too, telling Robert he doesn't need to say anything, that just knowing he loves her is enough, and the guests give their hugs and clear out one by one. Outside the dream, Claire turns in her resignation to Patrick, and Leo tries to talk her out of it, telling her she's more compassionate and quicker on her feet than she gives herself credit for. Jagger gets served with custody papers for his son Stone from a woman he hasn't seen in years, and Toussaint receives a letter hinting at a son of his own he's lost touch with. By the close, Robert wakes up saying he loves Robin more, with Anna at his side and Patrick and Robin newly engaged.
Episode 14, "Past and Presence, Part 2"
This is the series finale, not just the close of the season, and it opens with Leo rushing outside to find Saira's car engulfed in flames. Jagger pulls her out just before Patrick finds a second bomb planted nearby, and with only minutes left on the clock, the two of them have to figure out which wire to cut while Robin tries to get out to the scene to help. Robert keeps improving through all of it, his white blood cell count back to normal and his cancer numbers dropping, and once the bombing gets traced back to the same hate group that's been targeting the hospital, the case against Patrick is dropped entirely.
Jagger tells Saira he's moving back to San Francisco to fight for custody of Stone, and the two share a goodbye kiss before he leaves. Toussaint opens up to Epiphany about the son he lost touch with years ago, telling her he isn't going to make that mistake twice now that his son has reached back out. Robert and Anna make plans to leave the country together for an experimental treatment, but Robert slips out on his own ahead of her, leaving his cane behind and a note saying he'll be waiting for her once he's back to himself. Anna returns to find him already gone. It ends with Patrick packing up his office after getting fired as chief, closing out the series on Robert, Anna, Patrick, and Robin each landing somewhere new.
Shannon and Amanda go scene by scene through the entire batch, including a full breakdown of Robert's coma sequence and how it landed watching it with no idea going in how much of the season would end up centering on him.
