Night Shift Season 2 Part 2
Episodes 5-7
Shannon and Amanda continue their run through General Hospital: Night Shift season two, four episodes at a time. If you haven't listened to the episode covering episodes one through four, you may want to start there. This batch covers episodes five through seven.
Episode five, "Family Values," aired August 19, 2008, and picks up with Jagger Cates bringing his son Stone in to start therapy with Dr. Saira Batra. Stone starts out building with blocks, loses interest, and gets up to play with a train instead. When Dr. Saira tries to direct how he plays with it, he gets overwhelmed, goes back to the blocks, and knocks them over. Jagger steps in to try to help, and that's when Dr. Saira has to tell him she needs him to observe, not interact. At a support group for parents later, one of the mothers asks Dr. Saira how she can possibly understand what they're all going through when she doesn't have a child of her own. She tells the room she has a brother, and that her family sent him to a group home years ago after they gave up trying to reach him. It's why she moved to Port Charles in the first place. Jagger goes back to Robin Scorpio afterward and admits he lied to her. He tells her Stone is autistic, and that she's the first person he's ever said that out loud to.
Leo Julian hands his brother Kyle a case involving two women brought in after an apartment fire, one badly burned, who turn out to have been in a relationship for years, something the burned woman's parents have refused to accept. The parents show up, push the girlfriend out of the room, and won't acknowledge her as family even after doctors ask what their daughter would want. When it comes out that the two of them had been going through fertility treatment and the girlfriend asks about preserving her partner's eggs, the parents start saying things ugly enough that Leo steps in himself and threatens to throw them out of his hospital.
Episode six, "Playing with Fire," aired August 26, 2008, and centers on a young cystic fibrosis patient and her boyfriend, who also has CF. They're both brought in after being exposed to each other on a road trip, having met in an online support group only eight months earlier, both told years ago that they wouldn't live past thirty. Robin has to deliver news that changes everything about what happens next.
Robert Scorpio's cancer treatment moves forward too, with Mac Scorpio showing up to sit with him ahead of surgery. The two of them get into it over who really saved who from a shark off a reef in Australia decades ago.
Episode seven, "Listen to My Heart," aired September 2, 2008, and brings Robert into surgery. Mac and Robin wait it out together, and the news afterward is worse than anyone hoped. There's also a groom who comes into the ER in his tuxedo insisting he's fine to head back to his own wedding, then collapses twice before anyone figures out he has a heart defect he never knew he had.
A patient with four kidneys wants to auction off the extras for charity, and an old classmate of Claire's assumes she can't be both a former homecoming queen and a doctor.
Shannon and Amanda go scene by scene through all three episodes, including some real disagreements about what a few of these storylines were even trying to say.
