Before He Was Anyone

In October 2009, Helena Cassadine walked up to her oldest enemy, Luke Spencer, and asked him to protect her. Not from a rival family or a business deal gone bad. From her own son. She told Luke that Valentin was more treacherous than any Cassadine alive, that he intended to destroy everyone connected to both families, and that she regretted nothing more than not killing him when she had the chance. Luke had known Helena a long time. He said later he'd never seen her that scared of anyone.

Alexis Davis had never even met her half brother. She only knew him as a name that made her father, Mikkos, nervous, and she told Luke she'd always suspected Valentin might just be a story Helena invented for her own reasons. Then Alexis went to see Helena at the hospital herself and came away believing the fear was real. Helena, even flat on her back and asking for help, still found a way to work an angle, using what she'd dug up about Nikolas and Elizabeth Webber to blackmail her own grandson into protecting her.

Then, without any confrontation shown on screen, the storyline just closed. Helena moved on to something else entirely, and Valentin sat unclaimed for seven years, a name in the Cassadine family history with no face attached to it. A casting call went out for the role in late 2009. Nothing came of it.

Cassadine Island

That changed in the summer of 2016. Jason and Sam, stranded on the island while tracking Nikolas, caught a man coming down the staircase during a storm and dragged him in for questioning. He gave his name as Theo. Said he was a fisherman, caught out in the weather, who used to deliver fish to the estate's kitchen staff back when there was a cook. Then he went to warm his hands by the fire, his sleeve rode up, and there was a tattoo on his wrist. The Cassadine family crest.

He kept the act going for another week, even after he got caught studying a heavy book of Cassadine family history with the same crest stamped on the cover. Once Nikolas, Lulu, Laura, Kevin, and Dante were all in the room together, Nikolas looked at him and it clicked. He introduced Theo to the room as his own "bastard uncle, Valentin Cassadine." Theo dropped the act instantly, pulled a gun, and took the house.

He walked Nikolas into an office and produced a contract transferring every asset and holding to himself. Nikolas asked him to release the hostages first. Valentin refused, threatened to start killing them one by one, and Nikolas signed. Then Valentin turned the gun on Ava Jerome and said it was time to tie up loose ends. Nikolas lunged for the weapon. They struggled. Valentin shot him. Nikolas went over the balcony railing.

Everyone made it off the island alive, though Valentin sabotaged the jet that flew them out just to be sure they wouldn't. A few weeks later, he turned up in Port Charles still going by Theo Hart, met Nina Reeves in a Metro Court hallway, and helped her with a keycard that was giving her trouble. He steered the conversation toward the Cassadines and Nikolas, told her he'd grown up poor and idolized magazines like Crimson, the exact magazine Nina ran. They spent the night together. While she slept, he went through Nikolas's phone and listened to Spencer's voicemails about his summer camp play.

He was caught days later trying to take Spencer from that same camp, arrested, and extradited to Greece. Before he left, he told Nina that sleeping with her hadn't been strategic. He'd been following instinct. He told her his instincts said they'd meet again.

A Daughter, Three Tests, and a Mother Nobody Expected

He was back within weeks, walking into a Wyndemere gathering in a lion mask, claiming his release had come through a legal technicality. "I do," he said, pulling the mask off, claiming the house as his own.

Nathan's ex, Claudette, had spent months hiding from Valentin and eventually revealed why: he'd tracked her from prison, learned about her daughter Charlotte, and threatened the child. DNA confirmed Charlotte was his. He produced a birth certificate naming himself as the father, then cut his own finger in the middle of the hearing and gave Anna his blood for a second test on the spot, just to remove any doubt. Griffin punched him. The judge still ruled in Griffin's favor, pending full deliberation.

The full custody hearing came a week later. The judge spoke privately with Charlotte, who said she called Griffin "Daddy" only because Claudette had told her to, and that she knew Valentin was her real father. Anna presented evidence that Valentin hadn't existed as a documented person before 2011. He offered, again, to give blood on the spot for a third test. The judge ruled full custody to Valentin. Griffin punched him again on the way out. The judge noted the altercation didn't change her decision.

The custody war took its sharpest turn when Lulu and Maxie broke into the office of the obstetrician who'd delivered Charlotte, hunting for Claudette's file. Valentin caught them there and told Lulu flatly that Claudette was not Charlotte's biological mother. "You and I are Charlotte's parents," he told her. Helena had promised Stavros a child with Lulu, discovered Stavros was infertile, and had a woman named Daphne drug Valentin to collect a sample and create the embryo. Two independent labs confirmed it. Lulu, alone in a room afterward, said only, "I have a daughter."

Bedlington, Anna, and a Photograph He Won't Throw Away

Valentin told Nina, slowly, about a boarding school called Bedlington Academy in England, where he was sent at age six and never went home for a single holiday. Anna Devane later confirmed he'd attended the school, and found out it had burned down, the headmaster died, no arsonist ever caught. "Oh, Valentin," she said, reading the headline aloud. "What did you do?"

Anna kept circling back to a WSB motto, a Latin phrase, and a photograph of herself from her early WSB days that Valentin kept locked in a safe and couldn't explain. When it went missing, taken by Emma and given to Anna as a gift, his reaction was, in his own words to Nina, out of proportion for an old photo. The full story came out eventually: Valentin, under the name Ivan Theodore, severely deformed, alone at the WSB academy, Anna his one friend, an attempted kiss, her rejection, and the surgeries he funded afterward that remade him entirely. "That's what you always s-s-said about me," he stammered at her once, shaking, before shouting, "I was invisible to you!"

Anna's sister Alex had been posing as her for months, seducing Valentin, planting a listening device in a watch, chasing something called the Chimera. The real Anna had been drugged and held in a London clinic the entire time. Once the truth came out, Valentin ripped a pendant off Alex's throat and told her, "You just want the chimera. For once, I'm one step ahead of you."

Nina Reeves, and a Wedding That Wasn't Supposed to Be His

Valentin and Nina arrived at a church for Nathan and Maxie's wedding, which had just been postponed. Nina asked if he'd meant what he said about doing anything to keep Charlotte. He said yes. She proposed they get married on the spot instead, to present a united family to the court. In place of rings, they tied white ribbons around each other's fingers.

The marriage was held through the Chimera storyline, a biological weapon that nearly went off in the middle of the Nurses Ball, and through Valentin's arrest for treason once the WSB connected him to it. He signed himself out of the hospital against medical advice, took Charlotte, and made it as far as a cabin near Niagara Falls before Anna and Lulu tracked him down. Nina was the one who called it in. She left him divorce papers already signed.

The WSB dropped the charges not long after. Valentin came home to find Nina collecting the last of her things, and eventually won her back, proposing again in Marrakesh, where she stopped him mid-sentence and told him it wasn't necessary. She loved him. She wanted to be with him.

Cassandra Pierce and Peter August

Cassandra Pierce reentered his life holding a photograph proving Claudette was alive, years after Valentin had told everyone she'd died by suicide. She used it as leverage to pull him back into opioid distribution. He refused and agreed instead to work as a mole for Anna inside her operation, keeping most of it from Nina.

At the same time, Peter August's real identity as Faison's son came out, and it undid everything Valentin had rebuilt. He'd known who Peter was for years and had delivered Anna's infant son to Faison decades earlier out of pure hatred for her. When Nina found out, she packed a suitcase and left. "I'm already there," he told her.

A Second Daughter, and a Secret He's Not Ready to Share

Valentin has a new secret of his own. He got it out of Nina's mother, Madeline, in prison: Nina had a daughter during her coma years who survived and was placed for adoption, one Nina has never known existed. He's traced her to a young woman named Sasha Gilmore and is waiting on a second DNA test before he says a word to Nina about any of it.
