SORAS Part 1

Soap opera rapid aging syndrome, known as SORAS, is exactly what it sounds like. It is the practice of accelerating the age of a television character, usually a child or teenager, in ways that conflict with the timeline of the series or the real-world progression of time. The term was coined by Soap Opera Weekly's founding editor-in-chief, Mimi Torchin, in the magazine's early days, when it launched in 1989. Torchin has jokingly called it her one greatest contribution to the world of soap operas. Shannon and Amanda would probably agree.

If you have listened to Pier 54 for any amount of time, you have heard them bring up age inconsistencies on General Hospital more than once. This week's Port Charles 411 gave that ongoing conversation some structure. Fan contributor Cheri put together a detailed breakdown of how SORAS has worked across some of the most talked-about characters in Port Charles history, and the results are genuinely wild. This is Part 1.

Maxie Jones

Maxie was born on Halloween night in 1990, which means she should be 36. She was SORASed once as a teenager and aged a total of four years, putting her at 39 today. Kirsten Storms has held the role since May 2005, but there is a lot of story between that clown-window birth and where Maxie is now. Listen to the episode for the full picture.

Dillion Quartermaine

Dillion was born prematurely in May of 1992. He was SORASed once, going from 10 to 15 when Scott Clifton took over the role in 2003, and aged a total of five years. He is currently 38. Clifton stayed four years before leaving to pursue other opportunities, and Robert Palmer Watkins later reprised the role from 2015 to 2017. The episode gets into what was happening around each of those transitions.

Serena Baldwin

Serena was born on screen in December of 1993, the daughter of Scott Baldwin and surrogate Lucy Coe, who carried the child of the late Dominique Stanton. She was named after the Stanton family estate, Serenity Mansion. At some point her birth year was quietly changed from 1993 to 1989, a four-year SORAS. Most of her screen time was on the spinoff Port Charles rather than General Hospital, which makes her history harder to track. She is currently 36.

Lulu Spencer

Lulu was born on screen August 8, 1994, named Lesley Lou after her maternal grandmother and an alias her mother Laura used while on the run. As an infant she was diagnosed with aplastic anemia, which led to the reveal of her half-brother Nikolas Cassadine, who saved her life with a bone marrow transplant. She was SORASed once, going from 11 to 17 when Julie Marie Berman took over in October 2005, and aged a total of six years. Lulu is currently 37. There is a lot of story packed into those years. Georgie Jones

Georgie was born March 6, 1995, under a table at a nightclub owned by Luke Spencer, delivered by Kevin Collins. She was named Georgie because Maxie liked the name George. SORASed six years, she went from 7 to around 13 when Lindsay Leatherman took over in 2002. Georgie was murdered on December 17, 2007, at the hands of Diego Alcazar. She was 18 at the time of her death. If she were alive today, she would be 36.

Brook Lynn Quartermaine

Brook Lynn was born in 1996, the daughter of Ned Quartermaine and Lois Cerullo, named after Brooklyn, New York, where her parents shared happy memories. She is the most SORASed character covered in this episode, aged a total of 10 years. When Adrienne Leon took over the role in early 2004, Brook Lynn went from 8 to 18 in one jump. Amanda Sutton has held the role since November 2019. Brook Lynn is currently 39. The episode also gets into the 2025 reveal that Brook Lynn gave birth to a son, Gio, during a summer camp fling with Dante in 2002, a secret kept for more than two decades. There is a lot of story wrapped around that reveal, and the episode walks through it.

Michael Corinthos

Michael was born on screen December 29, 1997, originally named Michael Morgan before being adopted by Sonny. He has been SORASed a total of five years and is currently 33, making him the youngest of the group covered here. Chad Duell held the role for 15 years before Rory Gibson stepped in during May 2025. The episode covers the major moments around each aging jump, and there is more ground covered there than you might expect.

The Full Picture: Where Everyone Started and Where They Landed

One of the most useful things Cheri put together is a full comparison of original birth years versus post-SORAS birth years across a much longer list of characters than just the seven covered above. Seeing the numbers laid out makes the math impossible to ignore. A character born two years before another can end up the same age or older depending on how aggressively the show chose to move the timeline. The episode walks through the complete chart, including characters all the way from Nikolas and Lucky down to the youngest kids currently on canvas.

Cheri also broke down the friend groups that Port Charles was always supposed to have, based on original birth years before any SORAS adjustments. That group running from Maxie in 1990 through Michael in 1997 should have grown up together in a fairly logical sequence. After SORAS, Brook Lynn and Maxie are both 39. Lulu is 37. Michael is 33. The sequence still exists, but the gaps between them tell a different story than the one the show originally set up.
