General Hospital Fan Spotlight - Mother/Daughter Renee & Emily

The Fan Spotlight has had some memorable conversations, but this week brought something a little extra. Shannon and Amanda connected over Zoom with Emily and Renee, a mother and daughter who have been watching General Hospital together for as long as Emily can remember, and for quite a bit longer than that where Renee is concerned.

Emily has been watching GH since she was somewhere between seven and nine years old. She came to the show the way a lot of fans do, by being in the same room while someone else had it on. That someone was her mom, and the habit stuck. Now Emily is in Ohio and Renee is in Michigan, but they stay connected through the show the same way they always have, texting back and forth during episodes and feeling each other's frustration right through the phone. Emily is also the one who painted the most vivid picture of those early watching sessions, including a tiny kitchen screen with a flip-down display, gatherings around the counter, and a very specific combination of tuna sandwiches and cranberry juice that still counts among her favorite memories.

For Renee, the GH story goes back to the seventies, when her grandmother got her started. She was seven years old, living in New Jersey, and General Hospital aired at three o'clock sharp. Renee came through the door after school, a snack was ready, and they watched together. Years later, she was at work at AT&T in 1983 when Laura returned to the show, and the whole office gathered around a radio to listen. When Luke called out Laura's name, the room erupted.

Emily sent in her Fan Spotlight entry back in June 2023, which makes this one nearly three years in the making. She was gracious about the wait, said it was worth it, and jumped right in. The story of how she found Pier 54 in the first place is a good one. She had been thinking she and her mom should start their own podcast to talk about GH, went looking to see if anything like that already existed, found Shannon and Amanda, and has been listening ever since.
