General Hospital Fan Spotlight: Kyle

The Pier 54 Fan Spotlight has introduced us to a lot of wonderful General Hospital fans over the years, but Kyle might be a first: a viewer who found his way to Port Charles through Llanview. At 26 years old and living in California, Kyle came to General Hospital the way a lot of dedicated fans do, through family. His mom watched All My Children, One Life to Live, and General Hospital, and those three shows playing back to back in the afternoon were just part of the rhythm of growing up.
Kyle got invested in One Life to Live around 2011, particularly drawn to the character of Jessica Buchanan and her dissociative identity disorder storyline, something that connected to his later studies in psychology. When One Life to Live was cancelled, and characters like Todd Manning, John McBain, Starr Manning, and Blair crossed over to General Hospital, Kyle followed them. It was his first real glimpse into Port Charles, and while high school pulled him away for a while, GH was never fully out of the picture.
His return started with YouTube clips of the Kate and Connie DID storyline, which pulled him back in through the psychology angle. Then COVID happened, and Kyle found a way to watch General Hospital from 2002 forward, tracking storylines as he went: Zander and Elizabeth's kidnapping, Alexis hiding her pregnancy, Brenda's return, AJ and Courtney, Laura's breakdown. It was around 2021 that he found Pier 54, tuning in during the Maxie storyline. Listening to Shannon and Amanda dig into storylines he was just discovering made him want to go deeper, and then deeper still. Their coverage of Bobbie's history pulled him further back into the archive. Their episodes on Ned and Lois sent him to 1996. The Ryan Chamberlain deep dive sent him all the way to 1992, where he is now watching the Karen and Jagger era in real time, running One Life to Live and General Hospital simultaneously, the same way the ABC lineup originally aired them.
Shannon and Amanda talked with Kyle about favorite couples (Ned and Lois, with Jagger and Karen coming up fast), storylines he's anticipating (Stone and Robin, which he is already bracing himself for), and characters he's excited to discover (Heather Webber, who is going to be a field day for someone with a psychology background). There was also a really fun back and forth about which decade of GH they'd each choose to relive, and a genuinely great discussion about how soaps tackle real issues like HIV, mental health, and the conversations those storylines open up that other shows don't make space for.
Kyle also holds the distinction of being Pier 54's first video Fan Spotlight, and based on how the conversation went, this will not be the last time he sits down with Shannon and Amanda.
