Ethan Lovett
The Original Is Back, and We Have You Covered
Ethan Lovett is back in Port Charles, and we could not be more excited about it. The original Ethan, Nathan Parsons, returned to the show on April 17. We originally covered Ethan's full background in a Port Charles 411 episode back in 2023, and we are re-releasing it now as a bonus episode so you have everything you need going into his return.
Quick note: when we originally recorded this episode in 2023, Ethan had briefly been recast with actor James Ryan. That is who we reference at the top of the episode. The good news is the OG is back, and we are here for it.
Here is the short version of what you are walking into.
How It Started
Ethan arrived in Port Charles in January 2009, attempting to burglarize the Haunted Star Casino. Luke Spencer caught him in the act, and the two started talking. Ethan was Australian, had grown up without knowing his biological parents, and said he had met Holly Sutton during his travels. He had come to town specifically looking for Luke.
From the start, the question of who Ethan's father actually was took center stage. Luke and his wife Tracy Quartermaine suspected Luke might be the father, but a DNA test on May 7, 2009 came back negative. Tracy had in fact doctored the results to get Holly's son out of town. Holly then returned and initially named Robert Scorpio as Ethan's father. That answer did not hold either. Holly eventually admitted to Luke on May 29, 2009 that Luke was in fact Ethan's father.
Kristina, Johnny, and Getting Into Trouble
Ethan spent his early Port Charles years getting into the kind of situations that seemed to follow Luke Spencer's kids. He became romantically involved with Rebecca Shaw, a lookalike of the late Emily Quartermaine. He took a job as a mob lieutenant for the Zacchara organization under Johnny Zacchara, which did not sit well with Luke or Lucky Spencer.
His most complicated dynamic during this stretch was with Kristina Corinthos Davis. Kristina developed a serious crush on Ethan, and after her boyfriend Kiefer Bauer beat her, she shifted the blame onto Ethan. That put him in the crosshairs of Sonny Corinthos, Alexis Davis, and Sam McCall all at once. Lucky Spencer and Dante Falconeri eventually cleared him when Kiefer was identified as the real attacker.
The Kristina situation dragged on. She continued pursuing Ethan well after he made clear he was not interested, citing their age difference as the main reason. He eventually worked with Michael Corinthos and Abby Harper to try to redirect her attention. Sonny pulled strings to get Kristina into Yale, and at her going-away party, Ethan encouraged her to give her new chapter a real shot.
Las Vegas, Maya Ward, and a Marriage Nobody Planned
In late 2010, Luke was trying to get Tracy Quartermaine to remarry him after she found out their marriage had been built on a scam. He wanted to take her to Las Vegas to get the job done. Ethan and Maya Ward came along as chaperones. Luke dared Tracy to keep up with him at the bar, and Ethan and Maya started intercepting their drinks. A mix-up with the officiant resulted in Ethan and Maya getting married instead of Luke and Tracy.
They planned an annulment, but the newlyweds changed their minds before it went through. Edward Quartermaine offered them one million dollars to stay married for a year. Ethan agreed immediately. Maya took some convincing, but the student loans argument worked.
The arrangement turned real over time. Then Maya left for a business trip in Philadelphia, the communication broke down, and when Ethan showed up to find her, she was with someone else. They ended things on good terms. Ethan later flew to the Dominican Republic to finalize the divorce, and Kristina followed him down there, which led to yet another round of her parents assuming the worst.
Windermere, Helena Cassadine, and Irina
Ethan found a portrait of Laura Spencer while visiting Windermere Castle on Spoon Island and became fixated on it. He kept returning to the castle despite warnings from Lucky Spencer and a direct warning from Helena Cassadine herself, who knocked him unconscious on one of his visits and told him the island was haunted.
He eventually discovered a young woman named Cassandra living inside Windermere. She would not speak to him at first, but over time they got to know each other and became involved. Ethan later found out she had been under the care of Doctor Ewan Keenan for what appeared to be memory loss. He and Cassandra made plans to leave together.
Helena stopped them. She took Luke and Ethan captive and revealed that Cassandra was actually Irina Cassadine, Helena's secret daughter, who had been kept in captivity on a private island. Irina had not lost her memory. She had been ordered by Helena to make Ethan fall in love with her and then kill him. But Irina's feelings had become real, and she turned the gun on Helena instead. The gun was empty. Helena had staged the entire thing as a loyalty test. When Irina failed it, Helena had her killed in front of Ethan.
Helena then ordered Ethan to be killed as well, but Holly Sutton burst in and told Helena that Ethan was actually Robert Scorpio's son, not Luke's. Helena ran a DNA test and held off. Holly later told Luke in private that she had lied to save Ethan's life.
Luke used this opening. He went to Robert Scorpio, who was on a bridge and in crisis after believing his daughter Robin Scorpio-Drake had died, and told him that Ethan was his son and that Helena had taken him captive. Robert immediately had a reason to stay. On March 7, Ethan said goodbye and left through a secret passageway at Windermere. Robert and Holly followed, believing they were chasing after their son.
The Fiftieth Anniversary and Frank Smith
Ethan resurfaced in 2013 when Helena attempted to kidnap Lucky Spencer in Dublin and grabbed Ethan by mistake. He ended up reuniting with Luke Spencer and Laura Spencer aboard the Haunted Star, where Helena forced Laura to choose between shooting Ethan or Luke. Laura refused and passed the gun to Luke instead. Ethan and Laura shielded each other during the shootout that followed.
In July 2015, as part of General Hospital's fiftieth anniversary storyline, Ethan was found in a Vancouver warehouse with his foot on a pressure bomb. Luke arrived to disable it. The kidnapper behind everything turned out to be Frank Smith, who had a longstanding grudge against Luke and Laura. When Frank threatened to shoot someone, Ethan took a bullet in the arm. Holly got him to the hospital, and Luke killed Frank to protect everyone there.
Monte Carlo, Victor Cassadine, and the Auction
In September 2020, Ethan turned up at a casino in Monte Carlo, crossing paths with Olivia Quartermaine at the blackjack table. He told her he was tracking down a lead on Holly. When Robert Scorpio showed up, Ethan punched him to create a distraction. Security tied them both up in a back room. They broke free but were held at gunpoint by Winston Rudge's men. On the flight home, Ethan turned down an offer to return to Port Charles and said he had plans in Antigua.
In 2022, after Luke Spencer's death was reported following a cable car accident, Laura Spencer said that both Lucky Spencer and Ethan were unable to attend the Haunted Star memorial due to a cholera outbreak in the village where Lucky was volunteering. Tracy Quartermaine arranged a second memorial in Amsterdam that both could attend.
Holly later revealed to Robert that Victor Cassadine had been blackmailing her. Victor had Ethan held hostage to keep Holly compliant. Holly had been carrying out Victor's orders, including impersonating Anna Devane and shooting Lucy Coe with a rubber bullet, all to keep Ethan alive. Victor eventually sent Holly to recover a 35 million dollar necklace, threatening to kill Ethan if she came back empty-handed. After an elaborate escape engineered by Robert Scorpio and Felicia Jones, Holly was declared neutralized.
On April 17, 2023, Felicia and Holly arrived at a Cassadine compound in Venezuela where an auction was being held. A hooded man was brought into the room and the bidders were told that the winner would have the chance to end his life. When the hood came off, it was Ethan.
That is where our 2023 episode ends, and that is where you pick up as his story continues now in 2026. Nathan Parsons has said Ethan is coming back with a little more of an edge, and that there is more to his return than just catching up with family.
