Book Club Recap: The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli

We are rereleasing this episode from August 2020 as a companion to our current Port Charles 411 episode all about Diane Miller. Since Carolyn Hennessey, who plays Diane, wrote this book, it felt like the perfect time to reshare our book club session covering it. If you missed the original, here is a full recap of everything Shannon and Amanda covered about The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli by Carolyn Hennessey.

About the Book

The Secret Life of Damian Spinelli is a 2011 novel written by Carolyn Hennessey, who General Hospital fans know as Diane Miller. The book is a tie-in to the show and was actually woven into a GH storyline during late 2010 and early 2011, featuring Damien Spinelli enlisting Diane to help him write a novel based on his private investigator persona. The book was released on April 5, 2011, which coincided with the show's 48th anniversary.

Hennessey is also known for her Pandora book series, which Shannon recommends for anyone with tween kids. Before writing, Hennessey reportedly went to cast members to get into character, including asking Jane Elliot to act out a scene as Tracy so she could capture the flavor of writing that character. That kind of dedication comes through on every page.

The format is chapter by chapter, with each chapter featuring a different Port Charles character. Spinelli narrates his cases to Diane late at night, and the story is written so readers hear Spinelli telling his stories while Diane's internal thoughts appear in bold, constantly pulling her back to thoughts of Max, Haagen Dazs, and everything waiting at home.

What Shannon and Amanda Loved

The Characters Feel Exactly Right

Both Shannon and Amanda agreed that Hennessey nailed the voice of every character. Reading through the chapters, they said you could genuinely hear each character in your head as if you were watching the show. That authenticity made the book a standout.

Jax and the Dead Man's Hand

Shannon's favorite chapter involved Jax, who is written as 67 and a half years old. His father lived to be over a hundred. In the chapter, Jax nearly goes over a ledge because he found his first pure white hair. The age details and the dramatic reaction made it one of the more quotable moments in the book.

Edward and the Ghost of Lila

Amanda's favorite storyline involved Alice calling Spinelli because Edward had gone missing. Spinelli tracked him down to the family yacht, where Edward had gone out looking for Lila's ghost in the middle of a storm. Spinelli rescued him using a small life preserver boat. For Amanda, what made the chapter work was the way Spinelli spoke to Edward and the emotional weight of Edward searching for a way to reconnect with Lila.

Tracy Keeps Luke Captive

In the Tracy and Luke chapter, Tracy holds Luke in a room because he keeps running off. Spinelli goes to rescue him, only to discover that Luke could have escaped the entire time. He was choosing to stay for Tracy. Shannon and Amanda both found that ending genuinely sweet, even within a very strange setup.

Alan Haunts Monica

Shannon found the Alan chapter touching. Alan comes back and acknowledges that he was not a great husband while he was alive, but now that he is gone, he wants Monica to join him. Spinelli even calls him out on the fact that fidelity was not exactly his strong suit when he was among the living. Amanda noted that the request was a little selfish on Alan's part, but Shannon felt it had heart.

Helena's Memory Issues

Amanda called the Helena chapter one of the most believable in the book, which is saying something given Helena's history. In it, Helena has captured Alexis and taken her back to Greece, believing she is actually Alexis's mother Christina, whose voice Helena claims to have taken when she killed her. Spinelli travels to rescue Alexis alongside Nikolas. Shannon pointed out that given Helena's age and everything she had been through regarding her husband's affairs and children outside their marriage, some kind of psychosis was not entirely out of the question.

Robin Nearly Loses Her Medical License

This chapter got a strong reaction from both Shannon and Amanda. A professor had romantic feelings for Robin, and when she did not reciprocate, he changed her grade and claimed she had failed his class, potentially derailing her entire medical career. Spinelli handled it. Shannon and Amanda both said this would have made a compelling real GH storyline, especially given how rarely the show explored Robin's relationships during her years studying abroad.

What They Found Harder to Believe

Elizabeth's Side Business

Elizabeth is revealed to be running a fitness shaming service, dressing as a nun, firefighter, cop, school teacher, and other characters while motivating clients to work out. Shannon found the setup fun, but both she and Amanda took issue with the way the book talked about Elizabeth overall. Comments about her personal life and relationships were pointed, and Amanda felt that Lucky would have asked Elizabeth directly if he had questions rather than hiring Spinelli to investigate.

The Kate Howard Chapter

Amanda found the Kate Howard chapter the least grounded. In it, Spinelli has been erasing memories for Kate so that no record exists of certain things she has done. The chapter positions her as having essentially saved the world multiple times over, and the memory erasing as a way for her to return to a quiet life without being recognized for any of it. Amanda was not sure why Kate was selected for a chapter given that the storyline did not connect to anything recognizable from the show.

Jason and Spinelli Go Undercover

In one of the more memorable chapters, Sam has been distancing herself from Jason, and Jason wants to show how committed he is. Sam ends up joining a band, playing bongos, and wearing a blonde wig. Jason and Spinelli join the band in disguise to get close to her. Jason plays the piccolo. Sam notices Jason's character has familiar eyes but does not put it together. The two go for a walk on the beach, and eventually Jason and Spinelli reveal themselves. Shannon noted she did not remember this ever actually happening on the show and was not sure it did, but it made for a fun chapter.

Brenda at the End

The book closes with Spinelli being called in to help Brenda. Amanda found it hard to believe that Spinelli would not know who Brenda was, given that she had been with Jax, Sonny, and was married to Jason. In the book, Jason is presented as having connected them, but Amanda's point stood: there is no version of Spinelli's world where he would not already know exactly who Brenda Barrett was.

Carly Coming On to Spinelli

Both Shannon and Amanda agreed this one did not land. The consensus was that it probably only existed inside Spinelli's head, and even so, it felt out of place given who Carly is and how she fits into Spinelli's world.

A Few Fun Details Along the Way

The book references a couple of Port Charles locations that never appeared on the show, including something called the Night Owl bar and a Port Charles oil refinery. Shannon highlighted both during her read.

The book also references Spinelli's fear of clowns, which fans may remember from Night Shift, and repeatedly touches on the fact that Spinelli does not know his parents or family. Shannon and Amanda both said they had not fully registered how much that background shaped his character, and agreed it deserved more attention as an actual GH storyline.

Final Thoughts

Shannon and Amanda both gave the book a strong recommendation. It is a quick read, broken into self-contained chapters that make it easy to pick up and put down. Hennessey pushed Spinelli's character to an even more over-the-top place than the show typically does, and the book is funny because of it. Amanda said she would love to see a second book, and both hosts agreed the writing quality and character accuracy made it a standout.
